Editorial Reviews

One of the unlikeliest pop stars of the 1960s gets the bio treatment in The Singing Nun, a fictionalized account of the Belgian nun dubbed "Soeur Sourire" (Sister Smile). The cute tone is regrettable, and it's difficult to adjust to Debbie Reynolds in a habit, but the movie isn't bad for its kind. It's the light version of The Nun's Story, with Hollywood conflicts substituted for spiritual angst. The supporting cast brings in some camp appeal: Agnes Moorehead as a cranky nun, Chad Everett, and "Ed Sullivan as Himself." The best sequence has Sullivan's CBS crew showing up in Belgium to tape the Singing Nun for his TV shew--er, show--and sending the irresistibly catchy "Dominique" on its way to international success. It's the same breakthrough sequence found in every rock & roll movie, except the song happens to be about a Catholic saint. Doesn't matter: what works, works. --Robert Horton

Had been searching for this video for some time and so glad I finally got it. The quality was great and my mother truly enjoyed this older film.

Nuns certainly were popular in the 1960s! Sally Field flew into living-rooms all over the world with TV's "The Flying Nun", Rosalind Russell tamed serial prankster Hayley Mills in "The Trouble with Angels"; and, in 1966's THE SINGING NUN, Debbie Reynolds starred in a sugary-sweet screen biography of Belgium's famed Sister Jeanine Deckers (aka "Sister Smile").

Armed with a scooter and her trusty guitar "Sister Adele", Sister Ann--played with plenty of verve by Debbie Reynolds--travels to her latest posting at the Salvation missionary in Belgium. Sister Ann's community work is forced to take a backseat when her inspirational songs (including "Dominique", "Beyond the Stars", "Brother John" and "It's a Miracle") join the hit-parade and suddenly Ann is an overnight singing celebrity. Ricardo Montalban, Agnes Moorehead, Greer Garson, Katharine Ross, Juanita Moore and Chad Everett co-star.

In stark contrast to the peppy character played by Reynolds in THE SINGING NUN, the real life of "Sister Smile" was far from perfect. After leaving the sisterhood and coming out as a lesbian, she was plagued with financial problems (involved in the copyright of her songs) and later died with her partner in a bizarre suicide love-pact.

Warner's DVD is bare-bones apart from the trailer, but does feature a lovely widescreen print. Available exclusively in the Warner Brothers Classic Holiday Collection, Vol. 1 (Boys Town / A Christmas Carol [1938] / Christmas in Connecticut / The Singing Nun).
